Fall Leaf Cleanup: Pressure Washing Your Driveway and Patio in NC

Start with Leaves, Then Assess the Surface

Fall cleanup on a Chapel Hill driveway or patio starts with removing loose leaves and debris. Once the surface is visible, you can tell whether it needs routine cleaning, attention to leaf stains or repairs that washing will not solve. A useful cleaning plan separates these tasks instead of treating every dark mark the same way.

Greg Tilley’s Pressure Cleaning provides driveway and sidewalk cleaning and other residential exterior-cleaning services. Share photos of your driveway, patio and any affected walkways when asking for an estimate.

What to Include in a Fall Cleanup Plan

  • Driveways and entry paths: identify leaf-covered sections, shaded areas and stains that remain after loose debris is removed.
  • Patios and steps: note the material, nearby furniture, planters and access to the work area.
  • Wood or composite decks: identify the material and coating. These need a different assessment from concrete; see our deck cleaning and sealing information.
  • Drainage concerns: tell the team about standing water or blocked drainage. Washing a surface does not repair a drainage problem.

Will Pressure Washing Remove Leaf Stains?

Leaf-related discoloration is different from loose dirt. The result depends on the surface, how long the mark has been present and the treatment that the material can tolerate. Ask whether stain treatment is included in the estimate and which marks may remain. Avoid assuming that higher pressure will produce a better result: coatings, joints and older concrete need assessment before cleaning.

Flag rust, oil, paint or other marks separately. A quote for general cleaning may not include every type of stain treatment. Our pressure-washing pricing guide explains factors to discuss when comparing estimates.

When Should You Schedule Fall Cleaning?

Choose timing based on leaf accumulation, surface condition and the local forecast rather than a fixed calendar date. If trees are still shedding heavily, continued leaf removal may be needed after a wash. Discuss weather conditions and how long the area should remain clear before parking vehicles or replacing furniture.

For a larger project, identify your highest-priority areas first. A driveway, front walk and frequently used patio may be a more useful starting scope than including every exterior surface at once. Ask for the areas and any optional work to be listed clearly.

Prepare for an Estimate

  1. Take wide photos of each area and close-ups of persistent stains or damaged finishes.
  2. Provide approximate dimensions and describe concrete, pavers, wood or other materials.
  3. Note access restrictions, parked vehicles, furniture and nearby plants.
  4. Tell the team about any planned sealing, painting or repairs so the sequence can be discussed.

Roof and gutter work is a separate scope. See our roof and gutter cleaning page rather than assuming the same method used on a driveway is appropriate overhead.
